2 Peter 1:3-11
2 Peter 1 (NIV)
Confirming One’s Calling and Election
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness
“Calling” (www.m-w.com)
a strong inner impulse toward a particular course of action especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence
the vocation or profession in which one customarily engages
“Election” (www.m-w.com)
an act or process of electing
the fact of being : predestination to eternal life
the right, power, or privilege of making a choice
You already Have Everything You Need
Glory and Goodness
“Becoming High Quality” (2 Peter 1:3-11)
4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
If you possess His promises, you are enabled to participate in His nature... You can be like Jesus
Know His plan for your life
Understand God’s promises in scripture
“Promise” (www.m-w.com) --- the noun and not the verb
a legally binding declaration that gives the person to whom it is made a right to expect or to claim the performance or forbearance of a specified act
reason to expect something -- especially : ground for expectation of success, improvement, or excellence
“Walking in Promise” is an escape from sin and from wrong desires and harmful attitudes
“Becoming High Quality” (2 Peter 1:3-11)
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
The reason is that you need to take hold of the promise (prepare)
Matthew 22 (NKJV) 14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
Also in Matthew 20:16
You here have your list of things to work on... To add to your FAITH with EVERY effort
Goodness >> Knowledge >> Self-control >> Perseverance >> Godliness >> Mutual Affection >> Love
Layers of traits which lead to becoming a high quality christian
Each one builds on the previous one... You cannot skip the steps
“Becoming High Quality” (2 Peter 1:3-11)
8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
You must not only posses this list of qualities, but you must keep growing
These qualities keep you from being ineffective and unproductive
Ministry is more about character than it is about function (job)
It is most important to constantly work on our character
Nearsighted and Blind --- Cannot SEE
Forget:
They don’t act as if they have been cleansed
Still carnal (living by the flesh)
Literally forget
Living a life of guilt and shame
Not victorious
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
You must CONFIRM
R.S.V.P.
Um, WOW!!!
That is quite a promise! How can Peter promise that??
Never Stumble??? --- YES!!!
Too many Christians are stumbling around!
A RICH welcome:
I like a party but I also like “party favors” --- gifts given at the party
When we arrive in heaven, there will be differing rewards
I want a RICH welcome:
Huge Mansion, Crowns, Placement, much much more!!!
When you get “there,” it will not be about how much you did, but how you did what you did that God directed you to do
