Matthew 7 Summary

Matthew 6:25-26 (NIV)
Do Not Worry
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
Jesus is not giving advice, He is commanding us
Do NOT Worry about Life (Eat, Drink, Wear)
Jesus said you are more valuable than the birds
Literally because you are a Soul
Also because you have the ability to Sow, to Reap and to Store (instead of worrying, you can do this!)
Matthew 6:27-31 (NIV)
27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
Worrying is a sign of a Lack of Faith
Be careful with your words...
Learn to speak with expectation and in faith, remembering that you have been sowing and that a harvest is on the way!
Matthew 6:32-34 (NIV)
32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
What is a pagan? Someone who does not know God.
Godless people run after “these things”
God fearing people expect these things to come to them based on their sowing and reaping.
Seek First 2 Things...
The Kingdom of God
That is what we are seeking
The entire Sermon on the Mount is a description of the Kingdom of God
One definition is that it is being in heaven while still on earth (in your mind-set)
It’s Righteousness
That is the character of the Kingdom
Righteousness is a behaviour, a way of living your life
It is making decisions based on God’s laws and ways
A Knight was told by the King, “Choose anything you want.”
What would be the wisest choice? To become the General of the Army, or to marry the King’s Daughter?
All These Things will be Added To You
What Things?
Is it a blank check that Jesus gave you to fill up with whatever you want?
No. It is specific.
These “things” are the things that the entire Sermon on the Mount speaks of which are the attributes of the Kingdom and its Righteousness. It also includes the things we are not supposed to worry about, the basic necessities of life.
The things will come to you as long as you stay focused on the Kingdom, upon your relationship with Jesus and as long as you keep Sowing and Reaping
Instead of Worrying!

The Beatitudes
He said: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
